Snow spurts

As the Christmas snowstorm winds down in Minnesota I'm still observing bursts of snow showers particularly in northern Minnesota. In the Twin Cities I've seen snow totals for the event on the order of eight to fourteen inches. When the moisture turned to rain on Christmas it reduced the accumulation.

Typically the snow to water ratio is on the order of ten to one. Yesterday in the late morning and early afternoon, the Chanhassen Weather Service reported a quarter inch of precipitation and only an inch of snow. You could surmise we would have had another two to three inches of snow to add to the metro total.

I spied a snow total of 21 inches at Waterville in Le Seur County, Minnesota.

Snowfall totals from the National Weather Service

My observers in northern Illinois reported four to five inches of snow this morning around the Chicago area. It is still snowing there. This could cause some travel delays at O'hare airport through this evening. Snow should taper around dusk.

Travel safely and watch for icy spots, particularly on side streets.
