Road and weather report

In the olden days, the National Weather Service would issue a headline of Travelers Advisory for a combination of wintry mix that would slick up the roadways. Many would then assume, we at the NWS, were an extension of MNDOT or AAA.

We were not in a position to forecast road conditions but the weather elements that would result in difficult or hazardous travel. Depending on the micro-meteorology and the salt and sanding effort of the highway departments and municipalities, we could not determine the perils on the roadways.

Thanks to the internet and the consolidation of information through the Department of Transporation, there is a great web site to track road and travel conditions. It is highlighted in today's feature from the NWS on Winter Hazard Awareness week.
