Put to the test

On this second day of Winter Hazard Awareness Week, meteorologists have been put to the test in determining the extent of the wintry weather that has entered southern Minnesota.

The forecasters will be examining the new upper air sounding out of Chanhassen National Weather Service office that took place from 515AM to 630AM. This data will provide the clues in the vertical profile of the type of precipitation that will dominate the landscape today.

A couple of issues will need to be addressed: how much moisture will accumulate; how far north will the milder air at the surface traverse today; will enough filtered sunshine heat up the earth's surface to raise the temperatures above freezing; and what will be the duration of the event.
