A meteorological view of storms

Violent winds, large hail and tornadoes raked the upper Midwest on Sunday. Early in the day a storm producing large hail raced through central Minnesota, dropping two inch diameter hail at St. Cloud.

The area receiving the most damage was highlighted by the National Weather Service on Saturday as being under a heightened risk of strong storms and the possibility of tornadoes on Sunday. Hopefully, this early awareness put folks on guard during what turned out to be the warmest day of 2008, and also the most destructive severe weather of the season in Minnesota.

Severe weather was quite widespread. A powerful tornado killed several people in northeast Iowa.

National Storm Reports

Overnight, meteorologists at the Chanhassen National Weather Service put together a package of information on the violent storm that went through the north metro.
