Wet March Slop Storm

Finally a typical March storm!

As snow spreads northward this morning across the region, it's looking a lot like March outside the window here at the Huttner Weather Lab. A steady wet snow is falling over all of southern Minnesota.

There are a couple of keys to this late winter weather system.

1) Will areas south of the metro change over to or mix with rain this afternoon? The temperature profile in the lowest 5,000 feet is right near the freezing point by this afternoon. In areas that do change to rain, look for lower snow amounts. Some data this morning suggests that from the metro north and west, we may stay mostly snow all day.

2) How much of the area will see surface temps rise above 32 today? In those areas accumulations will be slushy, and a bit lower than in areas that stay near 32 degrees. It appears the best chance for 6" or more of wet snow will set up from Sioux Falls to Redwood Falls, Hutchinson, west Metro up to St. Cloud to Hinckley and Hayward.

The bottom line is we're in for a day of west sloppy snow and some rain mixing in. Take it easy on the roads and have plenty of blue juice handy for the drive around town!
