Do you support the Obama Administration’s move to block oil drilling in the Atlantic?

In a major reversal, the Obama administration said Tuesday it will not allow oil drilling in the Atlantic Ocean,” reports the Associated Press.

Interior Secretary Sally Jewell made the announcement on Twitter, declaring that the administration’s next five-year offshore drilling plan “protects the Atlantic for future generations.”

Today’s Question: Do you support the Obama Administration’s move to block oil drilling in the Atlantic?

It doesn’t seem like a NIMBY thing if other groups are using that area for something else.

  • Gary F

Has he released all the terrorists out of Club Gitmo yet?

I support President Barack Obama on this issue for 3 reasons: 1) I don’t trust the oil industry to stop spills and leaks. The British Petroleum fiasco off the coast of Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico is still trying to clean up that mess. 2) The world has actually over produced oil, which is why prices have dropped dramatically. The last thing we need now is MORE oil, which will only be consumed in larger quantities and therefore; pollutes the fragile ozone layer that is giving rise to global warming. 3) As commenter 4 stated, the Atlantic is already being used for human consumption along the Eastern Seaboard. Why negatively impact “the view” if people are responsibly using the shoreline?

Protecting the environment is a pretty high priority for me. That’s why I’m concerned about your assertion that oil “pollutes the fragile ozone layer that is giving rise to global warming.” You are clearly uninformed about of the science. Global warming and ozone depletion are both important issues but almost completely unrelated. Ignorant comments like that, obviously based more on emotion than informed logic, give ammunition to denialists. So, please stop commenting on this issue; you’re doing our cause more harm than good.

Considering that the Dept of the Interior took over a million public comments and this from Georgia Public Broadcasting – “The Department of Defense, environmental groups and more than a hundred coastal communities objected to the drilling proposal. They argued drilling would conflict with Navy and commercial fishing activity, and endanger wildlife.”; President Obama took input from all sides – the public, environmental science, DoD, economics, local governments and big oil – carefully weighed the decision and made, in my opinion, the right choice.
