Walker Art Center brings back Roy Lichtenstein’s ‘Salute to Painting’

This morning the Walker Art Center returned one of the more sizable pieces in its contemporary art collection to its rightful place — outdoors.

Commissioned by former Walker Director Martin Friedman, Roy Lichtenstein’s “Salute to Painting” was created specifically for the brick platform which faces Hennepin Ave.

The piece, which stands more than 25 feet high, was taken down in February for safekeeping while the museum’s brick facade was renovated.

Now that the work is done, the museum didn’t let the recent cold spell deter the sculpture’s return. MPR News photographer Jennifer Simonson stopped by and caught the installation.
