Minnesota Orchestra musicians to perform free community concert

The locked out musicians of the Minnesota Orchestra have planned a free community concert in mid-September at the Lake Harriet Bandshell in Minneapolis.

The concert, scheduled for Sept. 15 at 5 p.m., will be conducted by trumpet player Manny Laureano and feature performances of Weber’s Overture to “Der Freischutz,” and Tchaikovsky’s  “Symphony No. 5”

A similar concert last year drew close to 4,000 people.

Management locked-out the musicians on Oct. 1, 2012 after a dispute over contract negotiations.

Since then, Minnesota Orchestra Music Director Osmo Vanska has conducted the orchestra only once, in a “good will concert” organized by the city of Minneapolis.

Vanska has told the Minnesota Orchestra management he will resign if the musician lockout isn’t resolved by September.
