Sviggum to step down from U regents post
Steve Sviggum says he will resign from the University of Minnesota's Board of Regents.
The board met today (THURSDAY) to vote on a resolution asking Sviggum to either resign his position on the board, or to leave his position as spokesperson of the state Senate Republican caucus.
Sviggum was emotional, often choking back tears, as he told the board of his decision. Sviggum then left the meeting while the board prepared to vote on the resolution. It passed unanimously.
After the meeting regents chair Linda Cohen told reporters she would personally ask for Sviggum's resignation.
A board of regents ad hoc committee determined last week that Sviggum could not serve on the board and with the GOP caucus, without a conflict of interest.
It's now up to the Gov. Dayton to appoint a new regent to fill Sviggum's seat.
