UMN regents give thumbs up to bonding request
The University of Minnesota's board of regents has approved the school's 2012 bonding request.
Next legislative session the U of M will ask lawmakers for nearly $170 million in state money.
The bulk of the money is for Higher Education Asset Preservation and Replacement (HEAPR), essentially the pot of money used to keep buildings in shape and up and running.
Other projects include building new labs at the U's Itasca biological station, construction of an American Indian resource center on the Duluth campus, and renovation of the venerable Eddy Hall on the U's Twin Cities campus.
The bonding requests in recent years have come in at over $200 million. U officials say this request is "prudent" in light of the state's current budget situation, and hope lawmakers see fit to fund the entire request.
The U will pitch in nearly $40 million of its own money for the projects.
