One union's comment on the Zellers flap

Just got this from lobbyist Rick Nelson of Minnesota State College Faculty -- which represents all technical and community college faculty in Minnesota -- on the subject of faculty pay:

When speaker Zellers  said something to the affect that college professors are getting a 20% or 30% increase in pay. This is quite far from the truth.

As you may know from some of the information that was shared with you by members of the faculty at Century College and others, in the contract year 2000-01, the top end of our salary schedule was $61,110. Today it is $68,500, or in other words, in a decade a 12.1% increase overall.

During the same time period, tuition has gone from just under $2500 annually, to close just under $5000.

We are not the cause of the tuition rates going up.
