How a higher-ed government relations officer sees the MN political landscape

Q: How do you foresee having a Democratic Governor and Republican House and Senate playing out for higher education in MN?

A: It’s interesting because it is the exact flip from what we had for the last four years with a Republican governor and Democrats controlling both chambers. So, I think that it will play out similarly to how it has in the past. That means there will be a lot of back and forth on policy and on the budget. But the budget is going to be the number one priority–how do we solve the historically large budget deficit of $6.2 billion? I see negotiations going right until the end of the session.

-- Jason Fossum, former director of government relations for the Minnesota State College Student Association, who will be the Minnesota Senate Higher Education Committee administrator for the Republican caucus next month.
