U-Minnesota frat drinking ban ends

The Minnesota Daily reports that the Interfraternity Council at the University of Minnesota has ended its ban on alcohol -- but replaced it with a new system.

Council president Martin Chorzempa told the Daily:

“It’s not like we just said, ‘Ok, we’re going to lift it. It’s gone now.’ The moratorium has been replaced now by tougher and clearer risk-management polices and changes in our bylaws.”

The council is instituting a peer-monitoring group to help enforce drinking rules at events, and greek members will be able to invite only one guest each to functions that include alcohol.

The ban came after three sexual-assault cases were reported at three fraternity houses near the U. One case was dropped for lack of evidence.
