How Tommie tennis has angered its neighbors
This is more of a civic issue than an educational one, but the Pioneer Press' Fred Melo has the story of how the University of St. Thomas has infuriated some of its neighbors with its preliminary plans to build fenced-in tennis courts on a tree-filled lot that it owns at Goodrich Avenue and Mississippi River Boulevard.
Doug Hennes, vice president for university and government relations, told Melo:
"People really treat it as a community park, and we've never had any objection to that. We've really never had or looked at a use for the space until the past three years."
Residents are already voicing opposition, Melo reports.
The project wouldn't begin until next summer at the earliest, and still faces various rounds in the approval process. Hennes said a decision on whether to push forward will also consider "neighborhood input."
