Anti-racist efforts in Maple Grove spread, because the world is watching

“The world is watching” is one of those cliches uttered so often that we can occasionally forget that, indeed, the world is watching.

The kids of Maple Grove, who responded to racist graffiti last week by posting welcoming letters to other students, were likely focused only on their fellow students.

But the world was watching.

In Portland, Maine, Andrew Kiezulas heard about what was happening in Maple Grove — thanks to our friend the Internet — and he suggested that maybe that’s a pretty good idea for Portland, Maine too.

And yesterday, the staff and students at the University of Southern Maine agreed.

Are welcoming notes and good thoughts the cure for what ails us? No, but it’s something almost as meaningful.

It’s a start.
