Ad advances ‘genuine’ depiction of same-sex parents

Allstate is the latest company to feature same-sex marriage and parenting as part of its advertising strategy.

The couple in this ad recount what’s happened to them in just the last few years. “Twenty years ago, that wouldn’t have happened,” one says. He could’ve easily have been talking about the ad industry too.

AdWeek’s Ad Freak blog likes it, once you get past the “feel-good progressivism.”

The tone is refreshingly casual in its treatment of the couple’s sexuality, which feels tertiary compared to the unique and universally relatable joys of first-time parenting, and the importance of family. It’s a pleasant signal of things to come; as gay couples grow more commonplace, their media depictions will also become more genuine.
