Every few years, we have to experience the minute-by-minute documentation of “royal watchers” who are in ecstasy with this week’s visit to the United States of Prince William and Princess Kate.

News people, in particular, tend to take leave of their senses, but only because the ratings prove this actually is what Americans want to know about, apparently.

On ABC this morning anchors fairly gushed…

Over on CBS we learned one of the people hoping to catch a glimpse of the royal couple baked a birthday cake, and two others wore tiaras. Splendid stuff, indeed.

At the White House this morning, some reporters grumbled because they couldn’t ask any questions.

But what question could you possible ask?

It’s not that they didn’t try, with one reporter asking the president how his sore throat is.

“I’m fine,” the president said.
