KSTP owner scolds journalism group’s #pointergate views

KSTP owner Stanley Hubbard has fired back at a Twin Cities journalism association over its criticism of the so-called “Pointergate” story the station ran, purporting to show Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges flashing gang signs with a young man during a get-out-the-vote effort in north Minneapolis.

Last month, the Society of Professional Journalists called the story from reporter Jay Kolls “deeply flawed,” saying the station should have “applied much more skepticism to the elements of this story as it was presented to him.”

In a letter posted on the SPJ website, Hubbard defends the station, calling the criticism “out of line.” Hubbard suggests the criticismw as fueled by social media. “Much of what appears on the Internet lacks credibility,” he said.

Here’s his letter.
