1,000 Words: The homeless camp

In San Jose, Calif., today, authorities went ahead with their plan to clear what they say is the largest homeless camp in the United States.

It spread over 68 acres in Silicon Valley, one of the wealthiest areas in the country.

      It might not make sense to those of us with roofs over our heads, but sometimes living on the street or in a camp is preferable to our broken shelter/support system. We’ve got a lot of work to do to find real, actual homes for the homeless, rather than shuffling them from stopgap to stopgap.

    If we can’t fix this, how on God’s earth can we solve any of the major issues in this country, namely decent healthcare, a very leaky border and chronic unemployment?

    We deserve to be the #2 economy in the world.
