After 100 years, surf’s up for a senior

It’s never too late to achieve a dream.

Ruby Holt taught us that this week when the 100-year-old woman did this.

Ruby Holt, a 100-year-old Tennessee native, dips her foot in the water as she sees the ocean for the first time in her life Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2014, in Orange Beach, Ala. The Brookdale Senior Living and Wish of a Lifetime organizations both provided Holt a wish of her choice. She chose to see the ocean for the first time. "It's cold," Holt said after dipping her feet. She let it slip at her assisted living center that she’d never seen the ocean before, and so her friends applied to a foundation that grants wishes to senior citizens.

“It’s cold,” she said.

Holt grew up on a cotton farm and was too poor to leave Tennessee and too busy to do so, working in a shirt factory after her cotton-picking days ended.

“We don’t have nothing like this in Giles County,” Holt said.
