The responders

This latest video from the Coast Guard, showing its rescue of most of the crew of the tall ship Bounty off the coast, is a stark reminder that there are people who get in helicopters, fly into a hurricane, hover 30 feet above pitching seas, and then jump into the ocean that threatens to swallow the people already there.

You have to admit: that’s pretty remarkable.

Wow, that was harrowing to watch.

With the warning messages firing off. Same swimmer for both rafts. These folks have nerves of steel.

Lots a debris in the water.

The Deadliest Catch shows the great job the Coastguard do.

There is no amount of money in the world that could get me to do that job.

    Terrifying even to watch.

What amazing coordination of the human team, the machine, and the waves. They are so calm, focused and professional. I’m in awe.

This never should have happened in the first place. Irresponsible. The whole world knew this storm was coming . It also pisses me off when there are dramatic rescues of people who should have and could have been evacuated. From whatever their oncoming nightmare is. I love a hero as much as the next, but they should not be risking life and limb for this.

When hurricanes approach land, ships head to sea.

This level of skill and commitment to saving lives is incredible. It serves as a much better picture of dedication than does the picture of the honor guard at the Tomb of the Unknown. Their symbolic presence saves no one and just makes for cheesy phot ops in bad weather.
