A fish-eye view of an earthquake

What does an earthquake look like if you’re a small fish in a big pond?

It looks like this:

The U.S. Geological Survey has just released this video of the April 4th earthquake’s effect on the Devils Hole Pupfish, which lives on a ledge of a pool in the Mojave Desert.

Is it just me or does this video load 30 frames, pause, download the next 30, play, pause, wash, rinse, repeat?

  • Bismuth

The video is veeeeeeery slow to load. After 30 minutes, it was halfway loaded, which is enough to get the idea.

I’m getting the same slow load. I gave up after several minutes and what should have been 19 seconds into the video. I never did figure out what in the shot was the fish we were supposed to be looking at, so I lost interest. No patience today.

This truely shows some of the devastating nature of the surface waves caused by earthquakes… if this interests you, I suggest reading up on the Hebgen Lake earthquake in Montana (1959).
