Target and Best Buy see double-digit growth in online shopping

A firm that tracks retailers’ website traffic says both Target and Best Buy have seen double-digit increases in online shoppers in recent days compared with last year. The retailers were among the top five most-visited retail sites on the country, trailing Walmart and, according to Chicago-based comScore. The firm forecasts record-breaking online sales for today, CyberMonday.

“Last year, CyberMonday saw a billion in spending. That was the first $1 billion spending day on record,” said Andrew Lipsman, comScore’s vice president for industry analysis. “It was the heaviest day of the season last year. And we’re expecting about $1.2 billion in online spending this year.”

Lipsman said both Target and Best Buy have done a good job of using Facebook and other social media to drive shoppers to their sites. comScore says about half the online shopping done today will occur on workplace computers, during the lunch hour and coffee breaks.
