Kiva, a global microlending organization has a new program that is helping a woman launch a small cafe in southwestern Minnesota.
The Southwest Initiative Foundation has started a farmland retention program to solicit land donations from aging farmers. The farmers get a tax break, the foundation gets the land and pays taxes and the rental income helps pay for programs in the 18 counties of southwestern Minnesota.
Felipe Vergara wants to help poor college students, not by lending money, but by investing and getting a part of the student’s later income. He spoke at a forum in Minneapolis Tuesday.
