Are telecommuters less effective employees?

Yahoo ignited a controversy last month when it told work-from-home employees to get ready to move back to the office. Kara Swisher published the memo on All Things D. Excerpt:

To become the absolute best place to work, communication and collaboration will be important, so we need to be working side-by-side. That is why it is critical that we are all present in our offices. Some of the best decisions and insights come from hallway and cafeteria discussions, meeting new people, and impromptu team meetings. Speed and quality are often sacrificed when we work from home. We need to be one Yahoo!, and that starts with physically being together.

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer has since been called boneheaded, out of touch, and a controlling parent who does not trust her children to do their homework. One columnist even suggested she was using the decree as a tactic to get people to quit so Yahoo wouldn’t have to lay off more workers.
