Advice for interns (and their supervisors)

Next week on June 13, we’re going to have a show about internships.

If you’ve had an internships or have had interns, what advice would you give to people starting their first internship this summer? How did an internship change your life or career?

Why don’t you have this blog open every day so those of us who can’t call in can make comments on the discussions?

Don’t suggest that I use Twitter. For one thing, I really dislike Twitter comments. They are almost always incipherable, and if there’s anything understandable in them, among all the codes and inscrutable abbreviations, it’s very shallow stuff. Secondly, I don’t want to sign up for yet another “social network” thing. Third, I hate it that they mis-use a preposition (“@”) with every tweet.

I tried to get an “official” internship somewhere as a college junior, and the company then eliminated the program. I contacted family friends to see if I could offer up my communications services over the summer (my area of interest at the time/profession now) and luckily, someone said yes, and I was able to make up my own work plan and get good profile pieces, too!
