The city of St. Paul’s second in command is stepping down to return to the nonprofit sector.
Next month Deputy Mayor Paul Williams will take over as CEO of Project for Pride in Living, or PPL, a developer of affordable housing.
Williams said the Twin Cities metro remains one of the toughest places in the country for low-income people to buy and rent homes.
“There are significant numbers of folks who are cost burdened, where they’re paying more than 30 percent of their income for their housing costs, and that remains a significant challenge,” Williams said.
Williams has served as deputy mayor since January 2011. He oversaw nearly 3,000 public employees and a $500 million budget. Prior to that, he was a senior vice president at the Local Initiatives Support Corporation.
