Daily Digest: Trouble on Facebook

Good morning, and welcome to Wednesday. Here's the Digest.

1. A Republican House staffer running for the Legislature apologized for some Facebook posts that lauded the Confederacy and criticized President Lincoln. Nolan West said the posts "do not reflect who I am or what I believe."  One post called Lincoln "the single worst president this country has ever seen," an opinion not likely shared by most Republicans. He also called for Barack Obama to be lynched in 2008. (Star Tribune)

2. Republican Congressional candidate Jason Lewis said families should be off limits after a local Republican official posted a picture on Facebook of Lewis' DFL opponent Angie Craig with her wife and their sons. Lewis said private lives are private matters, and the conversation should be about issues that are important to the people of the 2nd District. (MPR News)

3. Sen. Tim Kaine came to Minneapolis Tuesday for a fundraiser for his running mate Hillary Clinton. Before the event he stopped at the University of Minnesota to talk to some students. Kaine did not take questions from Minnesota reporters during his visit. (MPR News)

4. Donald Trump's running mate Gov. Mike Pence spent the day in Washington trying to convince skeptical Republican leaders in Congress to sign on with Trump. Many remain deeply concerned about Trump and some of the rhetoric he's been using, and Pence even found it hard to get other Republican office holders to join him to criticize Clinton's "basket of deplorables" remark. (New York Times)

5. Trump on Tuesday proposed six weeks of paid maternity leave and expanded tax credits for child care. Hillary Clinton proposed a program with 12 weeks of maternity leave a year ago. Her plan would be paid for by a tax increase on top earners. Trump says his plan would help working families, but it's still not clear how he would pay for it. (AP)
