Daily Digest: Senators to override Obama

Good morning and happy Wednesday. Here's the Digest.

1. Both of Minnesota's DFL U.S. Senators will vote today to override President Obama's veto of a bill that allows victims of terrorism to sue foreign countries. The legislation is aimed at allowing survivors and family members of the victims of the 9-11 attacks to sue Saudi Arabia. Obama has said the bill sets a bad precedent and could lead other countries to sue the U.S. and its military in foreign courts. “I disagree with the president on this,” Klobuchar said. “But I think this is narrow enough and important enough that we should override his veto.” (Star Tribune)

2. Democrat Tim Walz has turned what was once a solidly Republican congressional district into a fairly reliable Democratic district. Of course his 1st District opponent Jim Hagedorn is trying to change that again this year. But Walz, who is often mentioned as a possible statewide candidate,  has found success by occasionally voting against his party, forming relationships across the aisle and winning the backing of the NRA.  Even some of his potential opponents say he's a hard worker and a good communicator. 3.  Shimon Peres died Tuesday at age 93. He was the last surviving leader of Israel's founding generation, a three-time prime minister, the architect of the country's secretive nuclear program and a winner of the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to make peace with the Palestinians. (NPR)

4. Monday night's presidential debate was the most watched in history, with about 84 million people tuning in on TV. The previous record was held by the Ronald Reagan-Jimmy Carter debate of 1980 which had about 80 million viewers. About 70 million watched the first debate between Mitt Romney and Barack Obama in 2012. (Politico)

5. Donald Trump on Tuesday blamed his microphone for the sniffling sounds he made during the debate. He also faulted moderator Lester Holt for being harder on him than he was on Hillary Clinton. And Trump doubled down on criticism of a former Miss Universe for what he said was gaining too much weight. (AP via MPR News)
