Daily Digest: Primary approaches

Good morning. Welcome to Monday and the new work week. Tomorrow is primary election day in Minnesota, so let's start the Digest there.

1. The most prominent member of the Legislature facing a primary challenge is House Speaker Kurt Daudt. While Daudt is the top ranking Republican in the state who may have his eyes on a try for governor in two years, he's not conservative enough for Alan Duff. And their contest is drawing attention and money from outside groups. (MPR News)

2. The most heated primary race for a congressional nomination is in the 2nd District, where four Republicans are competing to run for the seat GOP Congressman John Kline is leaving. As we've noted before Jason Lewis has the Republican endorsement, but Darlene Miller has Kline's backing. (Star Tribune)

3. Voter turnout for the primary will probably be light, but here are a few things to look for if you're interested and some of the stories we will be following. (MPR News)

4. The hack of those DNC emails has raised concerns about a cyber security nightmare -- the hacking of the election itself. In Minnesota the secretary of state's office has taken steps to protect its online data after a different hack a few years ago.  And officials across the country are thinking about the possibility that an online attack could call the election outcome into question. (Star Tribune)

5. When she was a U.S. senator from New York, Hillary Clinton pledged to create 200,000 jobs in the struggling northern part of the state. She was unable to pass some of her main initiatives.  And some of the measures she did pass didn't do much. (Washington Post)
