Daily Digest: Divine intervention cited

Good morning, and welcome to Wednesday.  It looks like the Vikings have lost their starting quarterback, but on the upside there may be intelligent life elsewhere in the galaxy. With that as a prelude, let's check the Digest.

1. The Minnesota Supreme Court heard arguments Tuesday about two proposed questions on the Minneapolis ballot in November, one that would set the minimum wage in the city at $15 per hour and another that would require police officers to carry liability insurance. Attorneys for the city say the power to enact ordinances lies with the city council.  Supporters of the measures say they're for the welfare of the people of Minneapolis, and voters should decide after an adequate number of people signed petitions to add the questions to the ballot. (Star Tribune)

2. Labor Secretary Tom Perez and Sen. Al Franken toured U.S. Bank Stadium Tuesday to highlight the stadium's diverse workforce. He's pushing efforts to attract more people of color and women to the building trades. (Star Tribune)

3. In an interview with a Christian TV news channel former Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann said God "raised up" Donald Trump as the Republican presidential nominee. Bachmann is a member of a panel helping Trump connect with evangelical Christians. She also said recently she's giving the nominee foreign policy advice.  “I actually supported Ted Cruz. I thought he was fabulous, but I also see that at the end of the day God raised up, I believe, Donald Trump who was going to be the nominee in this election,” Bachmann said. (Politico)

4. Incumbents won easily in closely watched primaries Tuesday. Two Republican Senators, John McCain of Arizona and Marco Rubio of Florida and Democratic U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida overcame challengers fairly easily. Remember during the primaries when the experts said this was the year of the outsider and that the establishment was in big trouble? So far, not so much. (NPR)

5. Donald Trump will meet with the president of Mexico before he gives a big speech later today on immigration. From this piece: "The visit comes after Trump has wavered for weeks on whether he will continue to hold his hard-line positions on the central and incendiary issue of his campaign, in particular his call to deport an estimated 11 million immigrants who are living in the United States illegally." (Washington Post)
