Daily Digest: 99 days to go

Good morning and welcome to Monday. Less than 100 days until the election now, and the presidential tickets are set. There was activity in the presidential campaign over the weekend, and legislative races here in Minnesota are starting to heat up too. Let's go to the Digest:

1.Donald Trump spent the weekend trying to find an effective way to respond to the parents of a Muslim Army captain who was killed in a suicide bombing in Iraq in 2004. The soldier's father Khizr Khan criticized Trump in a speech at the Democratic National Convention and kept the criticism up over the weekend, along with a challenge to top Republican leaders to disavow Trump. The GOP nominee responded first by questioning why Khan's wife Ghazala didn't speak at the convention, and then by saying he had sacrificed plenty by working hard. His responses drew bipartisan criticism. (New York Times)

2. Trump also raised concerns over the weekend about the schedule for presidential debates. He noted that two of the three scheduled presidential debates and the one vice presidential debate coincide with NFL football games. The Commission on Presidential Debates responded by saying the debate schedule had been set before the NFL schedule, and that it's impossible to avoid all scheduling conflicts. The commission said a presidential debate had never been rescheduled. (Politico)

3. If you're not feeling too good about voting for either of the major party candidates for president what should you do? Here are 10 questions to ask yourself as you think about voting. (MPR News)

4. With no major statewide offices on the Minnesota ballot this year, control of the state House and Senate will be a major story of the campaign. While all 201 seats are on the ballot, only some will be truly competitive. (MinnPost)

5. And money is starting to pour into some of those competitive legislative races. Some candidates have already raised tens of thousands of dollars, and the primary election isn't until next week. Some are raising that kind of money to try to win open seats. Others are trying to knock off incumbents. (Star Tribune)
