Daily Digest: Terrorism trial to begin

Good morning, and welcome to Monday. I hope you had a great weekend. There are now two weeks to go in the legislative session. Gov. Mark Dayton and legislative leaders are scheduled to meet privately today to talk about their differences. We'll see whether they can make any progress. In the meantime, here are some items in the news.

1. Three young men accused of conspiring to travel to Syria to join ISIS go on trial today in Minnesota. It's the first time for such a trial here, and it's expected that people around the world will be paying attention. Here's some background on who they are and what they are accused of. (MPR News)

2. At least in the first year after the Legislature enacted Gov. Dayton's plan for a new top tier income tax, the number of top earners in the state grew instead of shrinking. In fact the number of people who had at least $1 million in income grew by more than 15 percent. That counters claims by the governor's opponents who say the high taxes on the state's top earners are leading people to leave Minnesota. (Star Tribune)

3. Former talk radio host Jason Lewis won the Republican endorsement to run for Congress in Minnesota's 2nd District. Lewis defeated David Gerson after six ballots on Saturday, but two other candidates, John Howe and Darlene Miller, will likely challenge him in the primary for the opportunity to take on Democrat Angie Craig in November. (Pioneer Press)

4. Donald Trump does a lot of TV interviews. He also makes a lot of claims that have been checked and found not to be accurate. But rarely do interviewers call him on his misstatements. (Washington Post)

5. Trump and Bernie Sanders talk about big ideas in broad terms. Hillary Clinton is detailed, much more detailed. And her proposals tend to focus on process and incrementally growing government regulations and power. (Washington Post)
