DFL field open for Craig in CD2

DFL leaders in Minnesota’s Second Congressional District have canceled a series of candidate forums after two of their party’s three candidates dropped out of the race.

CD2 DFL Chair Susan Moravec said in a statement Wednesday that the recent withdrawal announcements from Dr. Mary Lawrence and Roger Kittelson prompted the cancellation. The remaining DFL candidate is Angie Craig.

Moravec added that the forums might be rescheduled if additional candidates enter the race.

“I would like to extend my gratitude to both Dr. Mary Lawrence and Roger Kittelson for taking on the task of running for office,” Moravec said. “Both candidates are to be commended for their desire to make Minnesota an even stronger state in which to raise a family and do business as well as their desire to have unity within our party.”

Lawrence said this week she was ending her congressional campaign to avoid harming the party with a divisive primary.

Kittelson announced his withdrawal from the race Wednesday on his website. He also endorsed Craig.

“I agree with Dr. Lawrence we need to focus our energy behind our candidate to win the Second Congressional seat,” Kittelson said. “I believe Angie Craig will protect our seniors, workers, farmers and small business owners.”

Craig was also endorsed Wednesday by Democratic U.S. Reps. Keith Ellison and Tim Walz and by Sen. Al Franken.

There are five Republicans already running for the open CD2 seat. The Associated Press reported Wednesday that business owner Darlene Miller is set to join the GOP field.

Incumbent Republican John Kline announced last year that he will not seek re-election.
