Veteran state Rep. Ann Lenczewski, DFL-Bloomington, said Monday that she will retire from the Minnesota House next month to join a lobbying firm.

Lenczewski, who is serving her ninth term, is the lead Democrat on the House tax committee and has previously chaired the committee. She said she has accepted a job with the law firm Lockridge, Grindal, Nauen P.L.L.P.

“Time for a new challenge,” Lenczewski said. “I’ve been so lucky to be elected by the folks I represent 11 different times. I think it’s time for a new face in Bloomington.”

Lenczewski will step down ahead of the 2016 legislative session, when lawmakers are expected to consider a significant package of tax cuts.

“I don’t think there will ever be a year that will be a good year to leave,” she said.

House Minority leader Paul Thissen, DFL-Minneapolis, said in a statement that Lenczewski’s departure leaves a “huge hole” in the Legislature.

“There is no one at the Capitol – indeed, few in the entire state – who knew and cared as much about taxes,” Thissen said. “She leaves behind a fairer, structurally sound tax system for all Minnesotans.”

Lenczewski’s retirement will require a special election to fill the vacant seat in House District 50B.
