Walz to back nuclear deal with Iran

DFL Congressman Tim Walz said Tuesday that he intends to support the Iranian nuclear deal that was brokered by the Obama Administration.

Walz called the deal “far from perfect” and said he doesn’t believe that violence perpetrated by Iranian leaders will fade after the deal goes into effect. But he believes it provides the best long-term solution for the region.

“This deal gives us the best chance we have had in years to halt the Iranian nuclear program,” Walz said in a statement. “It dismantles the progress they have made and opens up the country to strict inspections. Should Iran violate the terms of the agreement, we reserve the right to reimpose the kind of strict economic sanctions that brought Iran to the negotiating table in the first place. And, as always, we retain our right to defend ourselves from Iranian aggression.”

Walz is the latest member of the delegation to announce he’s backing the deal. DFL Sen. Amy Klobuchar announced Monday that she will also support the measure.

DFL Sen. Al Franken has not yet said whether he’ll support the deal.
