Franken supports Iran nuclear deal

U.S. Sen. Al Franken says he supports the Iran nuclear deal.

In a piece posted on CNN's website, the Minnesota DFLer writes that the deal negotiated by Secretary of State John Kerry with Iran is not perfect but it is strong.

This agreement is, in my opinion, the most effective, realistic way to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon anytime in the next 15 years. It does so by imposing a series of physical limits on Iran's nuclear program, especially its production of the fissile material it would require to make a bomb.

The agreement's verification provisions are extremely strong: 24/7 monitoring of, and unfettered access to, Iran's nuclear sites and ongoing surveillance of Iran's nuclear supply chain.

In the past week, Minnesota U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar and 1st District Rep. Tim Walz, both Democrats, have also expressed support for the deal.

Congress is facing a Sept. 17 deadline to vote on the deal. If it rejects the agreement, President Obama is likely to veto the rejection. It would then be up to opponents in the House and Senate to try to round up enough votes to override the veto.
