McFadden, Franken disagree on Guantanamo Bay
Republican U.S. Senate candidate Mike McFadden is joining House Republicans in opposing a possible move by President Obama to close the detention center in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
The White House is considering ways to override a congressional ban on bringing detainees to the U.S., according to a Wall Street Journal report.
Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., supports closing the facility and prosecuting suspected terrorists in U.S. courts.
"There are super-max security prisons that we can put these prisoners in from which there is no escape. And I think that these terrorists should feel what American justice is," Franken told reporters at a State Capitol complex news conference.
Franken said although he wants the detention center shut down, Obama does not have authority to sidestep Congress on the issue.
McFadden said closing the Guantanamo Bay facility amid growing threats from the group that calls itself the Islamic State would send a message to terrorists that the U.S. does not take the threat seriously.
“The fight against ISIS is only beginning, so why would anyone think that it’s a good idea to close Guantanamo Bay’s terrorist detention center?" said McFadden in a news release Monday morning.
