Nolan launches first TV ad of his campaign

There's never been a more "Up North" ad.

In the first spot of his re-election bid, 8th Congressional District DFL U.S. Rep. Rick Nolan is canoeing his way through a marsh, and practicing his shooting.

Those themes aren't new to the Nolan's campaign ads.

But in a year when his Republican opponent, Stewart Mills, first emerged on the political scene in part due to his views on gun control and has criticized Nolan for his votes on gun bills, it's no coincidence that Nolan's ad features guns.

For his part, Nolan has said he supports the right to bear arms, but he also voiced support for stronger background checks.

Nolan's campaign hasn't said how much money it's spending on the spot.

But documents filed with the Federal Communications Commission show that the Nolan campaign plans to spend at least $40,000 on broadcast network airtime starting early next week.
