Newman gets GOP nod to run for AG
Republicans have nominated state Sen. Scott Newman, R-Hutchinson, to run as the party’s candidate for Minnesota Attorney General.
He will run against DFL incumbent Lori Swanson, who is seeking her third term.
“Our attorney generals have promoted political ideology over legal responsibilities,” Newman told delegates. “I think that’s something that needs to be corrected and corrected now.”
In his speech to convention delegates, Newman pointed out that the state hasn’t had a Republican attorney general since 1966.

“You’re going to have for the first time in a long time a Republican attorney general in the state of Minnesota,” Newman said.
Newman just announced his candidacy yesterday. He is the only Republican who has announced for AG.
In the Senate, Newman was a top sponsor of a constitutional amendment that would have required Minnesotans to show photo identification before they could vote. Voters rejected the amendment in 2012.
The Independence Party endorsed Brandan Borgos, an attorney from West Saint Paul, as its attorney general candidate.
