Bakk: Legislative leaders signed off on bonding and taxes

DFL Senate Majority Leader Tom Bakk said legislative leaders have agreed in principle to most of the outstanding issues remaining in this year’s legislative session. Bakk said Democratic and Republican leaders have signed off on an $846 million public works borrowing bill and a tax bill that increases state aid to cities and provides state funding for a water pipeline to southwestern Minnesota.

Bakk said he expects the House and Senate to vote on the tax bill, a medical marijuana bill and a bonding bill tonight. He says he expects lawmakers to finish their work by Friday night.

“I’m not aware of any outstanding issues in the Senate," Bakk said. "When the four leaders met, I don’t believe there were outstanding issues in the House either but I’m certain that’s the case in the Senate.”

Bakk said lawmakers are still working out the remaining details on a bill that spends $283 million. The key ingredients of that bill include increased funding for home and community-based healthcare workers, money for rural broadband and more money for early childhood education and K12 schools.

Legislators have a constitutional deadline of Monday to finish their work.
