State Sen. Westrom to announce a run for Congress in the 7th

Republican state Sen. Torrey Westrom said tonight he plans to run against DFL U.S. Rep. Collin Peterson in Minnesota's 7th Congressional District. Westrom will announce his campaign at an event Thursday in Moorhead.

Westrom also will hold an event in his hometown of Elbow Lake in northwest Minnesota later in the afternoon.

An attorney, Westrom was first elected to the state House in 1996. He was elected to the Minnesota Senate in 2012.   He's voted in favor of alternative teacher licensing, also for the failed constitutional amendment banning same sex marriage, and against a tax increase for wealthy Minnesotans.

Westrom lost his sight at 14 in an accident on his family's farm, and is believed to be the first blind person to serve in the Minnesota Legislature.
