Day three with work but no pay for some federal workers

Hundreds of thousands of federal workers remain on the job with no pay on this third day of the federal government shutdown.

That includes thousands of workers in Minnesota. Shea Larson processes veterans' claims at the Whipple Federal Building near the airport in south Minneapolis. Her position there has been categorized as "essential" so she must report to work even though she's not being paid.

Larson lives in Stillwater and said  she has enough savings to pay her bills for six months. Still she says she's concerned about finances.

"I am to certain degree.  I'm also a member of the military as well, so I'm getting hit hard on both ends, " said Larson. " I just do

Larson is a  member of American Federation of Government Employees, the largest union of Federal workers in Minnesota. So is Marie Pine who is also on her third day of working without pay, matching veterans' claims with their military service records.

Pine likes helping veterans, but she says she's irritated under the circumstances. Pine said she's got money saved to cover about a month's worth of expenses, but she's concerned she might have to borrow money. She's also looking ahead to the holidays.

"[I'm] more concerned about Christmas not having enough savings to buy kids' presents," Pine said.

There are more than 18,000 federal workers in Minnesota.
