Construction of two temporary parking lots is set to begin this week on the mall in front of the State Capitol building.

The work is part of the $271 million renovation project underway in and around the historic structure. Temporary lots are needed to make up for the spaces adjacent to the Capitol that are closed during the building construction work. Those lots are being used as staging areas. Work on the Capitol basement begins in September.

Spencer Cronk, commissioner of the Dept. of Administration, said in a news release that the parking changes impact those who work in the Capitol but public parking will not be impacted.

"Construction around the Capitol will cause inconveniences in the short-term but ensure a safe and functioning Capitol building and complex for future generations," Cronk said. "Throughout the construction we are committed to keeping the Capitol open to the public and ensuring access to the legislative process."

The temporary lots will be removed and the mall restored once the restoration project is completed in December 2016.
