Faith leaders urge lawmakers to protect poor in budget

Minnesota's Catholic and Lutheran Bishops are urging Gov. Dayton and state lawmakers to protect the poor in the next two-year budget. The group sent a letter to policy leaders raising concerns about the problems of poverty and hunger in Minnesota. They also want them to pass a budget that helps alleviate poverty in Minnesota.

"With this letter, they hope to remind legislators and the public that budget decisions are moral decisions," said Jason Adkins, executive director of the Minnesota Catholic Conference. "Ensuring the basic dignity of the poorest and most vulnerable Minnesotans should be the top priority when spending decisions are made."

The letter is not endorsing a specific budget plan but works to outline what the bishops say should be an "ethical and moral framework."
