MN DFL supports tax cut extension

The head of the Minnesota DFL Party is calling on Republican members of the state's congressional delegation to support an extension of the Social Security payroll tax cut, which is set to expire at the end of the year.

Chairman Ken Martin tried to turn up the heat on Reps. Michele Bachmann, Chip Cravaack, John Kline and Erik Paulsen today during a conference call with reporters. Martin said Republicans who do not support President Obama's proposed extension of the payroll tax cut will violate their pledge to oppose tax increases.

"We're in a tough economic time right now," Martin said. "And if we're going to raise taxes on anyone, we should be raising taxes on those that are most able to afford it, not the 3.1 million Minnesotans that are in the middle class that would be hit hardest by this proposal that the Republicans put forward."

Martin said none of four Minnesota GOP members of Congress have yet taken a clear stand on the issue. His comments echo a similar message that Democrats nationwide have been using against Republicans.
