Horner might run as IP candidate in 2010

Tom Horner, co-founder of the Twin Cities public relations firm Himle Horner, says he's thinking about running for governor in 2010.

Horner says he's been approached by Republicans, as well as the Independence Party of Minnesota.

"People have talked to me, and I'm listening," Horner said.

Horner is a longtime political analyst for Minnesota Public Radio News, who served as chief of staff to former U.S. Sen. Dave Durenberger, R-Minn. He says he's been approached about running for office before but was never interested. This time, Horner says the people talking to him are frustrated by the lack of moderate voices in the current gubernatorial field. And he shares that frustration.

"I think Minnesota is at a critical point, with huge issues facing it," Horner said. "And we have to start making better decisions and have a better process for bringing people together in some common ground. And I don't see the campaign heading in that direction."

Hormer says part of the decision is whether to break his GOP ties and join the IP. But Horner says the GOP is no longer the party it once was. He says the IP is now the center ground.

Don't look for a announcement for several weeks. Horner says he'll likely make a decision in late January or early February.
