The Daily Digest: 2-3-08
Good morning digest lovers. Since we've been working all weekend covering the presidential candidates, I thought it would be good to give you an extra special Sunday edition of the digest. What? Are those boos I hear?
Democratic hopeful Hillary Clinton will be in Minneapolis this afternoon. Her visit comes one day after her main opponent, Barack Obama, filled the Target Center for a Saturday afternoon rally. MPR and the Pi Press have stories. The Twolves are looking to sign Obama up since they only filled the Target Center twice this season. Ba da bing! (It may be Sunday but the jokes are still bad).
Meanwhile, Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney campaigned in Edina on Sunday. He told the audience that he was the true conservative in the race. MPR and the Pi Press have stories.

The Wall Street Journal says new voters are key for Obama. DFL Rep. Keith Ellison is mentioned.
DFL Rep. Jim Oberstar and Minnesota House Majority Leader Tony Sertich head up Obama's Iron Range Committee. The two were backing John Edwards before he dropped out.
Meanwhile, Gov. Pawlenty was also hard at work campaigning for John McCain - in Illinois. I'm told Pawlenty is back in Minnesota and doesn't have any other campaign events scheduled at this point.

Gov. Pawlenty is proposing to lift the moratorium on nuclear power plants in Minnesota.
U.S. Steel plans a $300 million expansion at the Keewatin ore plant.
Lt. Gov. Carol Molnau is getting low marks in the latest MPR/Humphrey Institute poll. Poll respondents are also split on a nickel a gallon gas tax increase.
Molnau tells Forum Communications that she will not resign.
Forum Communications says the DFL is looking beyond Pawlenty for a solution to transportation.
All sides are taking a go slow approach when it comes to the HPV vaccine.
The Star Tribune says the family of a bridge victim is at odds over a house.
Congress
Sugar growers are looking to protect themselves under NAFTA. GOP Sen. Norm Coleman is mentioned.
DFL Rep. Tim Walz writes an op-ed calling for better care of soldiers and veterans.
The Des Moines Register says DFL Rep. Collin Peterson and other farm bill hagglers may rely on a 1949 law. That could increase the price of food.

The DFL Senate candidates debate today in Winona.
KARE-11 says Tuesday's caucuses are critical for the DFL endorsement.
Democrat Al Franken draws 220 in Wadena. He also visited Crookston and Detroit Lakes.
