Special Election Called

A day after appointing Sen. Tom Neuville, R-Northfield, as a district court judge, Gov. Tim Pawlenty has called a special election to fill the vacancy.

Pawlenty scheduled the special election in Senate District 25 for Thursday, January 3, 2008. If needed, a special election primary will be held December 18.

District 25 includes LeSueur County, and parts of Rice, Scott and Sibley counties. Neuville held the seat since 1991. Pawlenty appointed Neuville to the bench in the Third Judicial District on Tuesday.

The weeklong filing period for candidates opens Thursday.

Former Republican state representative Ray Cox of Northfield says he'll formally announce his candidacy tomorrow. No word yet on a DFL candidate.
